Whether you’re looking to build everyday life skills, tackling behaviour challenges, or helping your dog feel calmer and more settled, this is where we begin - with an Intitial Consultation.

Every dog—and every household—is different. That’s why we start with a proper conversation: time to talk things through, see what’s really going on, and work out a plan that feels realistic and right for you.

You might be:
  • Starting fresh with a puppy or new rescue.
  • Struggling with barking, reactivity, or stress at home or out and about.
  • Feeling overwhelmed.
  • Wanting to teach new behaviours like coming back when called or lead walking.
  • Or simply wanting some clear, thoughtful support to make daily life easier.
Whatever’s going on, this session gives us the space to get to know each other and make sense of what’s happening. You’ll leave with clarity, practical next steps, and a plan to move forward—with as much or as little follow-up support as you need that we will work out in our session.

Your Consultation

Your initial consultation lasts around 90 minutes and can take place here in St Just, at your home, or online—depending on what suits you and your dog best. Choose your location on the drop down menu. If you have more challenges to work through, longer sessions (2 or even 3 hours) can also be booked. These longer sessions are especially useful if you live further away, have more than one dog or household involved, or need time to cover multiple issues.  If you are not sure how long you need, just pop me a message before you book or schedule a free call (link below).

Travel costs may apply for Home Visits if you are out of Zone 1 - take this link to find out more – this also may mean on rare occasions I have to adjust appointment times if there is longer travel to you, but I will be in touch as soon as you have made your booking if there are any adjustments to be made.

Payment is required at time of booking to confirm your appointment, and I’ll always be clear about any additional costs (such as travel) before you commit. Payment can be made by card (Stripe) or bank transfer.

During the booking process you’ll fill in a short form to help me get a feel for your situation so be ready to answer a few questions. So you are prepared, the questions are:

  • Name of your dog(s)
  • Age
  • Breed or breed type
  • What are you looking for help with?
  • What are your goals?
  • What have you tried already, including whether you’ve sought advice and where from?
  • Has your dog ever shown any behaviour that made you concerned for safety?
  • Is there anything else you think I should know before we meet?

I may then email you some further questions or ask for more information once I have gone through the form. On rare occasions I may feel that the sort of training you are looking for is not within my skill set, and if that is the case, I will let you know straight away and refund any payments. What I don’t do includes sports training (agility, hoopers, cani cross, flyball, etc), bite work, assistance dog training, severe aggression cases, group classes … but I do a lot of things mainly based around problem solving the day to day challenges people face with their dogs.

On the day, we will take the time to talk things through. We will look at where you are now and I will fill in any gaps. We will look at your goals, both short term and long term. I will observe your dog, and we will begin building a picture of what’s going on and how best to help.

You’ll leave with:

  • A clearer understanding of your dog—what’s driving their behaviour, and what might be getting in the way
  • Tailored advice on what to focus on right now—specific steps you can start taking straight away
  • A sense of the bigger picture—what progress might look like and how we can work towards it
  • Suggestions for ongoing support—whether that’s more sessions, check-ins, or simply space to try things out.

Support Sessions
At the end of your session we will look at the ongoing support that you need and get you booked in. You can book these as we go, or I can hold some regular slots for you – if you are booking two or more sessions you will get a 5% discount.

All support sessions must be paid in full within 48 hours of booking to confirm your place. This secures your slot and ensures the diary stays manageable for everyone. Sessions not paid for within 48 hours of booking may be cancelled or offered to someone else – I will contact you first in case something has been mises, and always appreciate a quick response.

Whatever the challenges you are facing, this Initial Consultation and assessment is the place to start

I approached you with my dog Ralph who was super reactive to other dogs. I was extremely anxious but you put me at ease. We worked at my pace, you showed me how to gain Ralph’s trust and for him to enjoy spending time with me. Ralph improved greatly with time and each day I felt less anxious walking with him. You were an absolute godsend I highly recommend your service and if I ever need any support with any of my dogs you will be the first person I call.

Your one to one approach really works. With dogs (and humans), one size does not fit all and a training plan/method that works for one, does not necessarily work for another. You find the right way based on understanding the dog, the owner, their circumstances and their relationship. Millie and I are testament to this. Thank you

Truly excellent support received from Carolyn at West Cornwall Dog Training. She skilfully identified ways to support problems my dog and I were experiencing. I can’t believe how quickly we have progressed and I’m eternally grateful to Carolyn. (5* Review originally posted on Google)

Carolyn has really helped me with Queenie’s reactivity, caused by a series of unfortunate events. A tweak to my treat timing, and some advice about how to manage public spaces, dogs and people, really made all the difference! I would really recommend Carolyn for her knowledgeable, calm and reassuring approach to dog training.

After exhausting our options with various trainers we came across Carolyn on a Google search. I read some reviews on her website and most of all I was impressed with her experience and her different approach to dog training.
We had used game based training but all these things seemed to wind our dog up.
Our dog became lead reactive and I have struggled for over 2 years, nothing seemed to be helping no matter what training advice I was given.
Since regular sessions on the "calm down canine" course I have learnt how to deal with situations, how to read my dog and what I need to do to make her feel safe. I myself have calmed down and alot less stressed when we are out which has helped immensely. I no longer feel that we have to go into panic mode each time we see a dog, infact she has become so much calmer now and we have the tools to deal with reactive episodes!
Thank you Carolyn, you have enabled me to see light at the end of a very long dark tunnel and we are enjoying going out into town and on walks more now.

Carolyn is not a dog trainer. She is a person trainer. Carolyn will show you how to understand your dog's behaviours and teach you how to encourage those that you want. Her techniques are all reward based so there's no negativity - your dog is never told that he is doing wrong, rather that the required behaviour is far more rewarding. Carolyn has helped me with a number of issues with my rescue dog, and our days together are much calmer, and more enjoyable, than they were initially.
