What Makes Dog Training Stick

31/07/2025 - Training Tips and Principles

... for you and your dog.

When people come to me for help with their dog, they often ask the same question: How long will it take? How many sessions will we need?

And the answer — though I can usually give you a fair idea — is that it depends.

Because real, lasting change isn’t instant.

If you want training that sticks — the kind that actually works in real life — here’s why it takes a little time, and why that time matters.

🐾 Momentum and accountability

That might mean weekly sessions. Or fortnightly check-ins. Or simply taking time to sit with new ideas and test them out in real life.

Training isn’t just about learning what to do — it’s about understanding why something matters, and how it fits into your day. You need space to observe your dog, try things, notice changes, and build on them.

There’s no magic fix — but there is momentum. And that builds over time.

🧠 Digesting between sessions

Some of the most important work happens between sessions.

That’s when you practise, play, reflect, and develop your handling skills.

It’s also when new routines bed in — or when you realise something isn’t quite working and we need to tweak the plan. That’s not failure. That’s part of the process.

Sometimes people worry they’re not ‘doing enough’ between sessions. But small shifts can have a big impact — especially when they’re thoughtful and well-timed.

⏳ Don’t fall for a one-size-fits-all pace

I can often make a good guess at how many sessions it might take to reach your goals. But just like with driving lessons, you might know how far apart the lessons should be, and you know the cost — but in the end, how many you need depends on how things go. How confident you feel. What challenges pop up. How much practice you’ve done.

Some things click quickly. Others take a bit longer. It’s not about rushing — it’s about doing it properly.

I’ve worked with thousands of dogs and their humans — and no two pairs move at exactly the same speed.

Some clients fly ahead. Others go slow and steady. Both are absolutely fine.

Your progress will depend on your dog, your circumstances, your time, and your headspace. My job is to meet you where you are — and help you build from there.

🌿 Real progress happens in real life

Progress doesn’t just happen in training sessions. It happens on the school run. On your walk to the shops. In the hallway when a visitor arrives.

That’s why so much of my work is done in your real-life environment.

We work on streets, on footpaths, in your home, with your distractions. We talk about your daily life, your dog’s routines, your priorities.

Because that’s where training really counts.

🎯 You don’t need to do everything at once

One of the biggest shifts for many clients is realising they don’t need to tackle everything right away.

A good support plan brings clarity, not overwhelm.

It gives you one or two key things to focus on — enough to move forward, not so much that you stall.

As you build confidence, we build momentum. That’s how real progress happens.

Whether you’re starting fresh or picking up where you left off, just know this:
We’ll take the time to make it stick — with thoughtful, practical support every step of the way.
